The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
